What Are You Building Your Foundation On?
Have you ever read or heard the story of the "Three Little Pigs"? If not, here is a small synopsis of it.
Once upon a time, there was a mother who had three little pigs. The mother pig struggled to feed her little pigs, so she sent them out into the world to see their own fortunes when they were old enough. Each pig was tasked with finding their own shelter.
The first pig who was lazy built his house of straw. The second pig, who was also deemed lazy, built his house of wood, and the third pig who consistently worked all day built his house of brick. One day a wolf suddenly comes along and asks to enter each home, with each pig responding that they would not let him in. So the wolf decided to blow each house down and is successful with the first two, but not the third. The wolf was unsuccessful with the third one and realized that he could not blow it down. So he decided to go through the chimney, but the third pig had other plans for him, and the wolf falls in and is boiled to death by hot water on the fireplace.
I often find that stories and movies have a meaning and a translation of something within our own lives. As I sat a few weeks ago just in thought, the Holy Spirit gave me the word "foundation." I quietly asked, "What does this mean"? As I began to listen, He began to download and He gave me the story of 'The Three Little Pigs". I didn't quite understand why He gave me this story but, I obeyed and I read it word for word. As I began to read, I started to understand. This story has many in-depth meanings that are relatable to our everyday lives.
I struggled for many years on where and how I built my foundation. For a great portion of those years, I was Pig 1 and 2. I allowed the enemy to come in and devour me within my mind, my emotions, my finances, my relationships, and most importantly, my relationship with God. My foundation was not firm. I constantly went back and forth, and sometimes I find myself tip-toeing back there. But, I wake myself up, and I have Decree and Declare over that. God has given me the tools, whether through leaders, pastors, spiritual connections, prayer, devotion, His word, to help set my firm foundation within Him. There was a time the enemy was the wolf; he had me right where he wanted me. While God was building the foundation within me, the enemy was also trying to build a negative foundation upon my life.
1Cor 3:10-10 Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.
12 Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward.
Often we try to build our own foundation within our lives, and we become Pig 1 and 2, where we are trying to maintain and do things ourselves. We try to go the easy route. Are we building on the firm foundation of Jesus? Is the quality of your work/life worthy of the foundation upon which it is being built? What type of life are you leading? What is your foundation actually built on? Who are you becoming? Have you done with your life what God would have you do with it?
Here are a few things that we can learn from piggy 3:
He built his house on a firm and sturdy foundation.
He knew his enemy
He was prepared
He fought back
Is your foundation built on straw, sticks, or bricks? Do you feel that your foundation is firm in Christ? The purpose of a foundation is to hold up and hold together the structure above it. Like each of the pigs, we all have something trying to come in and devour us. But,1 Peter 5:8 says, "Stay Alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. How many times will we allow the enemy to torment, discourage, tell us we are not worthy, cause us to doubt ourselves to the place where we accept it? The great thing is as we mature in God, our foundation becomes more solid. Remember when you first built a house and you are anxiously waiting for the foundation to be laid down. A firm foundation is necessary in order to build a healthy spiritual life. When the foundation is weak or not built properly, it will crack under pressure.
**Begin to study the scriptures/word, Pray, worship, take the time to attend therapy if needed, find a mentor or accountability partner, journal, and exercise. I pray that this will help you begin to realize where and how you are building your foundation. God always knows where we are. He wants us to start our foundation with Him and only Him. Begin to rest in that. He is with you always and He is continually doing great work within you!
